Before We Begin
In 2011, a spice blend used by a chef Benny followed on Facebook prompted a bigger question: would people buy a product with his name on it? The answer led to a manufacturer that produced private-label blends for chefs—and an opportunity to turn Benny's taste, identity, and reputation into a consumer brand.
He developed three signature blends, including Bold & Zesty Spicy, and wanted labels that looked nothing like ordinary supermarket seasoning. A designer recommended by the chef studied Benny's website, videos, and silhouette mark, then produced what Benny calls “kick-ass” rock-and-roll packaging.
The manufacturer delivered roughly ten thousand bottles. The formulas were finished, the labels were printed, and the products existed: this was no longer merely an idea. The photographs preserve that first production run; Benny's narration explains why a fully realized brand ultimately evolved in another direction instead of becoming his next permanent company.
Benny developed three signature spice blends, commissioned custom labels, and ordered about ten thousand bottles.
It tested whether Benny's identity and reputation could carry a consumer product—and whether customers would trust his name on the label.
The products were completed and the first run existed, but the company evolved in another direction before the brand became a permanent business.
