4 Split Market Croatia 2010
Sep 06
First stop the fish market where you can get the catch of the day and that is what it is CAUGHT THAT DAY. The market is open until pretty much everything is sold out then they do it again the next day.
Picking up some cockles of some type, if you want to taste he will shuck one for you on the spot.
Can you imagine having this available to you just about everyday.
For a small fee about 5Kunas ($2) this gentleman will clean your fish for you.
Only fish you can't get SALMON, there is some outstanding tuna, mackerel, sardines and little tiny fish that are perfect for frying and they are like fish chips. Here is the recipe I like to use: /archives/v1/chef/recipes/fish-fries/
eel is pretty common but not so good here. It's very fatty and strong tasting.
Diocletian's Palace. Coffee time soon, it's always coffee time in Croatia:)
Heading into the market. Cheeses, meats, veg, nuts, incredible sausage!
No band saw here, the meat is VERY rustic and cut on a big butcher block.
As you walk by the various stands you are offered a taste of the products. They are all very proud of what they are selling.
Always great flowers for sale as well, not sure who this woman is but she looks like a spy

Wanted to include this picture although blury of a relative of a friend we call her Granny. She is in her 90s, can sing like a princess, loves my fish fries with hot sauce and walks like she is a teenager. No cane , no wheelchair just a spry old women who still loves life and eats her blitva (local greens)
Enjoy,
Benny
