01 / Before we begin
One Last Time
Ed was in town, and I couldn't let the final game at the original Yankee Stadium pass without being there. I found two tickets. Then we set out for the Bronx.
Ed had become a Yankees fan because of me. This was more than a game for us. We were going to walk through those gates together, watch Derek Jeter play there one last time, and stay until the lights began giving the old building back to history.
I'd been coming here for years.
I knew the smells. I knew the crowds. I even knew which gate moved fastest.
That night everything felt different.
The Yankees won, and José Molina—my neighbor at the time—hit the final home run in the old stadium. Those facts belong to the record. What I remember most is the day I shared with Ed.
Ed and I spent September 21, 2008 together at the final game played in the original Yankee Stadium.
I was saying goodbye to a place I knew intimately, while sharing it with the friend I'd made into a Yankees fan.
We left with the crowd, climbed into a rickshaw, and kept the day going all the way toward the train.

04 / The day
From the first mile to the final lights
The photographs and films remain in the order Benny made them.
Two tickets. One last chance.
Ed and I started toward the Bronx with the old stadium still somewhere ahead of us.
Before We Went Inside
The crowds, signs and entrances were all part of the anticipation. We stopped long enough to photograph each other before joining everyone at the gates.
The cameras started rolling before we walked inside.
September air. The smell of hot dogs. Vendors shouting. The subway rumbling underneath.
Our View of History
I'd been coming here for years. I already knew the field, the stands and the scoreboards. That night I photographed them as if I could remember every corner.
The Lights Go Out
I watched the ceremonies knowing a familiar place was becoming a memory right in front of me.
The Walk Home
We walked out with everyone else. Thousands of people were leaving the same place for the last time. The game had ended. Our day hadn't.
