Before We Begin
Four years after Detroit Rock City reached theaters, the film returned to Hollywood for a reunion screening. Scott McCluskey brought Benny along—and they did not arrive quietly.
Scott had performed as Ace Frehley in the KISS tribute band Hotter Than Hell and had worked as an Ace stand-in during the film's production. When the producer invited him back for the 2003 screening at ArcLight Hollywood, Scott brought Benny for the fun of it. Benny arrived beside him in Paul Stanley makeup.
The evening gathered people connected to the film for a screening, commentary, and questions. Benny remembers it less as a conventional red carpet than as a family reunion. The photographs preserve that spirit: Lin Shaye laughing as Scott and Benny lift her between them, then Scott and Benny posing with Shannon Tweed.
There are only two photographs, but they hold the whole temperature of the night—old working relationships, movie history, KISS mythology, and the kind of invitation that begins with, “Come along. This will be fun.”
Scott McCluskey invited Benny to a 2003 Hollywood reunion screening of Detroit Rock City, and the two arrived in full KISS makeup.
A friendship formed through touring and KISS work opened a door into the extended family surrounding the film.
The cast, crew, writers, and friends watched the film together, heard stories from its production, and left Benny with two wonderfully unguarded photographs.
